Lots Of Ways To Get Cool At Jackson County Fair
CENTRAL POINT, OREGON — With temperatures expected to reach the high 90s and low 100s, the Jackson County Fair provides great opportunities to cool off and have fun. The Fair, presented by Sherms, runs today through Sunday at the Jackson County Fairgrounds & Expo Park in Central Point.
Water misters are set up throughout the grounds as well as the air conditioned Robert & Phyllis Mace Building, which features the popular Charter KidZone. Other ways to cool off include the Euro Bubbles attraction, which combines bumper boats and human-sized hamster balls in which participants get "zipped up" in six foot diameter clear balls floating in a pool filled with water. The Charter KidZone is an interactive hands-on area for kids and families to play and learn in a variety of "zones." Throughout the week, popular costumed characters have been on hand for photos. Today, Scooby Doo and Ben 10 will appear at noon, 3, 6 and 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday will feature SpongBob and Patrick, and Barney will be there Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Boys Like Girls, a pop band from Boston, will play tonight in the Lithia Motors Amphitheater at 8 p.m. The group's “Two Is Better Than One,” featuring Taylor Swift, reached No. 9 on the Billboard pop chart. Canadian rock group Loverboy plays Saturday night. The band boasts four multi-platinum albums with hit singles such as “Turn Me Loose” and “Working for the Weekend.”
Wednesday's Wynonna concert was the biggest so far highlighted by cool evening temperatures and a packed standing section in front of the stage. "The Wynonna concert was excellent and her connection with the audience was very evident," said Jackson County Fairgrounds & Expo Park Director Dave Koellermeier. "It got hot yesterday, but in the late afternoon and early evening, the temperature really drops rapidly. It's nice to have a lot of opportunities to cool off during the day with shady areas, misters, and air conditioned indoor settings, and then have the temperature cool off in the evening."
The 4H & FFA Grand Champion Market Steers were selected Thursday, and Saturday will feature the culmination event with the goat and beef auction at 7:30 p.m. in the Olsrud Pavilion.
Admission is $9 for adults, $6 for youth ages 7 to 12 and seniors 62 and older, and free for children 6 and under; Sunday admission is free. Hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Carnival hours are noon to 11 p.m. through Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Parking is $4, or fairgoers can catch an air-conditioned bus ride for just $1 from Sherm’s Food 4 Less on Biddle Road, or from Crater High School, Central Point. Buses run every half hour from 10:30 a.m.
